My dad wants to get speed skates, but how many wheels should he go for?
5x80mm and 5x84mm were the old popular arrangements for racing skates. There are a few people still using them.
4x100 is by far the most common setup today.
There are a few skates with 2x110 and 2x100.
I think there are a handfull of people using 3x110.
The problem is that at some point as the wheels get bigger, they become more awkward to skate on. That may be at different points for different people.
What does your father currently skate on? If he is not skating currently, racing boots may not be for him at all and the larger wheels and frames may be harder to learn on.
Reply:real speed skates are still five wheels , but it depends on his foot size too. large dia will be hard for a new skater to handle.
I would find some used skates and work your way up. Learn how to stop without brakes first. It would be a good way to stay alive too.

Need help with roller skates?
What kind of shops/malls sell quad (not inline) roller skates? I've looked around all the shoe shops and sports shops I can think of, but nowhere sells adult size quad skates. What kind of place would sell them if none of the aformentioned?

Harder wheels are faster and more durable, but soft wheels may have better grip (grip is determined by many factors, and wheel manufacture is arguably more important than durometer) and less affected by road bumps. Wheel profiles and thicknesses again vary by application. Elliptic profiles minimise friction for a faster ride; more rounded profiles have better grip and are more stable.
For a beginner, I would say it wouldn't really matter; you don't want to have to buy another pair of skates, so just get whatever you think would be better, the faster or slower wheels and skates. But if you are really a beginner, stick with the 80mm.

In most cases, if you buy skates that have frames that fit 80mm wheels, you can't switch 'up' to larger wheels. The larger the wheels, the higher you are off the ground, which means, it can feel unstable. Once you get better, and you want to go fast, you can get a skate with longer frames, which in essence gives you stability (5x80mm or 90mm wheels), but can be hard to maneuver. 1. Bring your skates to a local sporting goods store with a skate oven. You should consider "baking your skates." I work at a store here in Canada which sells those BSX's and, while I don't like them personally, I have Missions and I know they are fairly stiff. The baking process works wonders and is about equivalent to skating in them for about two weeks (give or take). They should go in for 5 minutes at 172 Fahrenheit. You will then wear them, laced tight, for 10 minutes or until the warmth of the boot is gone.
2. As for the support of your weight, I don't forsee any major problems as the chassis you have is fairly strong. Although, as I said, I'm not a huge fan of what you have, but they are decent.
3. The bearings are above average ABEC-5's. Make sure that you keep rotating your wheels (switching the right wheels to the left) in order to provide equitable distribution of the wear.
4. DO NOT USE WD-40 to clean the bearings! I cannot stress this enough.

The answer was that his cheap, discount store, no name skates with plastic frames. The part holding the front wheel was broken so that the front wheel wouldn't roll.
Your skates look like they have stamped frames where the parts are screwed together. The joints between the parts are likely to be the weak spots. A lot of the stamped frames tend to be made of thinner aluminum because it is easier to stamp.
The strongest frames are made of a one piece extrusion. The extrusion process allows internal bracing to be added without any joints and high stress areas to be made heavier.
Most extruded frames come with single piece axles which are also much stronger than 2 or 3 piece axles.
I was hoping to find a good picture of an extruded hockey frame. www.rockethockey.com/frames.html has a reasonable picture but I would deffinately not recommend it since the snap in axles will be inherently loose and weaker than a screw together axle.

What do i need to know if i'm going to buy a new rollerblade/inline skate?
I'm new to rollerblades. i'want to learn it for fun. if there's anything that i should know before i buy one? some are quite cheap;some have this thing like a brake at the back.

You definatley want the brake in the back. When I was learning how to ride a bike I enjoyed it so much I didn't remember how to use the brakes so I went straight into a light pole.
The brakes on blades can be a little tough at first. You will have to use balance.
Roller Blading is great and a good exercise too. Don't do any fancy tricks at first.
Now about buying them...
Go to a sporting store like ***** Sporting Goods or something of the like. Shop around there and a few others. If you see a pair you like then that's the way to go. The can range from $40-$150. So it is all a matter of what looks and feels good. Try going to the roller rink and get a leg in(pun). The rentals are crap but you will get a feel for size.

Reply:sketeboarding or inline because in golf all you do is swing a stupid club at a little ball, and skate boarding helps you build up the muscles in your lower body because you do alot of jumping and bending and its all about the movement in your ankles.

But, it shouldnt be just riding it, if your wanting to get fit skateboarding, your gonna have to get into some tricks. I can do alot of tricks and after about 20 minutes of skating and doing those tricks, i am out of energy, proving i got a huge workout.
If your not up to learning all these tricks, and skating for a few hours a day, then i definitely recommend inline skating.
Because skatboarding takes alot of work and persistence. And golfing doesnt challenge your body physically as much as the other two

Reply:Not Golf it's a nice walk spoiled. I'd suggest cycling. It's hard at first but you'd soon find it very rewarding. There are still many quiet country lanes your amongst the scenery in the fresh air. If you want to miss the traffic you can always get on a train.

Would 54mm 90a wheels work well as anti-rocker wheels for aggressive inline skating?
If you're referring to the grind wheels in the center, I'd recommend buying a smaller wheel and harder. You probably want a 99 or 101 durometer (sp?) wheel so that it doesn't stick on ledges and rails. As for size, mid to low 40's would probably be the best size.

Is it easier for a seven year old girl to learn to roller skate or inline skate at an indoor rink?
Quads (the older version of roller skates with wheels aranged in a rectangle) are likely to be easier to use in this case.

ABEC ratings have been used to describe the perfection of most machined bearings, grading the smoothness of polish.
Swiss adding a different claim. It isn't just the smoothness of polish that matters but the entire assembly. There's a site that better explains it and shows a chart on which is better and for what. The differance is how they rate their bearings, thats the differance in abec and swiss. skateboarding and inline skate bearings are the same ratings, there is no differance.

If you have any private run (indoor) skateparks in your area, many will offer summer camps or lessons for kids who want to get into the sport. I've listed some websites below for Woodward and Point X.

Where is the best place to go to rollerskate, inline skate in Miami or Miami Beach?
Both cities are very open to skating on streets and sidewalks. I have been down there twice to skate during the Great EsSkate (www.SkateMiami.com) with about 400 other people to skate the in Miami, Miami Beach, and South Beach in February.
Their club's site is www.beachbladers.com and they list directions to their regular skating locations but don't describe them. I'm sure they will be willing to give you hints on the best of them if you contact them.
The Great EsSkate is a great weekend. If you live there, you don't even have to spring for air flights or a hotel room.

First of all, how good are you...really? There aren't many inline companies out there and our sport is small compared to skateboarding and bmx. If you're the best in your town, or among the best, a great place to start is with your local skate shop. Make sure they know who you are and get to see you skate. You may also want to make a demo video showing your best tricks. Don't worry about the quality, editing or music, the skating should speak for itself.
If you're looking to get sponsored by a major company, you'll have a lot of work ahead of you. Start going to competitions, win those competitions, move up, meet people and sell yourself. It's all about networking and the more people you know, the more people you'll have supporting you. There are tons and tons of incredible rollerbladers out there who no one's ever even heard of. Get good and get yourself known. The rest will come.

It depends on how you skate, and/or your style. Of course, you will use your calves, quads, hamstrings, and your glutes, for the basic skating moves, but if you lean forward to go faster (tuck position), you will also use your core muscles (abs %26amp; back), as well. Look at professional speed skaters; their lower body is usually very well-developed. This info is from my experience of inline skating for 11 years, but you can also check out the links I've included for some interesting reading.

What can you bring to the sponsor?
Getting a sponsor is like job hunting. Write up a document that tells a potential sponsor what he gets for his money.
Detail competitions (especially those that you have won) and other events that mean their name will be visible.
If you are a local guru, teaching other local people, that adds clout to your ability to be noticed.
Detail how you will make their name visible.
Then look for businesses in your area that are interested in the people who see you.

Nothing really. In-line skating is rollerblading. SInce rollerblade was the first in-line skate brand the two are commonly used interchangably. Even though all in-line skates aren't rollerblades, they get the credit for being the first

Unless you mean Roller skate with the old type of skates with the 2X2 format with the wheels set up like how a car is.
It will take a little to adjust, but you won't have any problem with it. Alot of things you were able to do with the older skates you will be able to do easier and better once your balance is adjusted to it.

If there is a league in your community already set up, your local city recreation dept. should be able to tell you.

You can find clips on sites like YouTube or Google Video. However, if you want to purchase videos and help keep our sport alive by supporting the industry, you can buy videos at several inline stores. I have listed a few below. Some of them offer bundles of older videos for pretty cheap.

Which brands are good for inline skating?
It all depends on what type of inline skating you are looking to do. I am going to guess recreational as opposed to aggressive or stunt skating. If this is correct, you will want to stick with the name brands which you will find to be of better quality and more comfortable. A few of the best brands out there are K2, Rollerblade, and Roces. I have included a link below to each of these manufacturers. From their sites you should be able to find retailers in your area.

I think Chris Haffey is 24 or about that anyway. Totally incredible skater however old he is! And as for an email address, the best way to contact him might be through the Remz website. Go get yourself some inline skates! Seriously though, to get started all you really need is a smooth flat surface, some inline skates and, for protection, knee pads and wrist guards at least.
When buying your first pair of inline skates, I would suggest NOT going to places like Wal-Mart or Target. The skates you'll find at these stores are of poor quality and won't be comfortable. Head to a local sporting goods store and look for skates by Rollerblade, K2 or Salomon (just a few suggestions). These skates will cost you a little bit more, however you will find them to be much more comfortable and they'll last.
If you've ever ice skated, inline skating is sort of like that. There is quite a bit of balance involved. I'd suggest starting out on a flat smooth surface so that you can control your speed and not get all scraped up. (inside of a garage is a great place to learn). You may even want to start out inside your house and stand up on a carpeted surface just to get the feel of the skates. From there start slow and try to get comfortable pushing off from side to side to get speed.

Are there any indoor skate parks in New York City (aggressive inline skating) that are open? If so, where?
There used to be an indoor park in NYC...I think it was called Underground or something like that. I searched for it, however was unable to find any info and it may have closed down. I'm not aware of any other indoor parks in the city, but have included a link to a list of skateparks below.

What muscles are worked while inline skating/ rollerblading?
I've rollerbladed all the time in the pasts and stopped about a year ago. I've started up again so my dog can get a great workout in the morning. We rollerblade for at least and hour. I was just curious as to what muscles are worked. I know my thighs are on fire but some sort of shin muscle is definitely worked. It was on fire when I first started.

That is probably "tibialis anterior" muscles if your feeling it in the front of your lower legs, next to the bone (tibia). Yes, this is also known as the area for "shin splints". I'm sure that you know that with time and exercise the fire and aches will dissipate.

Inline skating is an incredible exercise as it not only works almost all the major muscles in your body but it can be an excellent cardio workout if you move your arms more than you normally would.

Which one is better, aggresive inline skating or skateboarding?
I agree that they are both equal. Both sports are extremely difficult and have unique elements. Skateboarders can flip their boards around while doing airs and spins. Rollerbladers can do huge spins to grids and multiple switch ups. It just depends which sport you prefer. Personally, I love rollerblading and to me it is better only because it is what I do.
The people who answered that rollerblading is just spins or that people will get beat up if they go to a skatepark are totally ignorant. Rollerblading is still a growing sport and there are WAY more grinds out there than there are spins. People who aren't familiar with the sport aren't going to be able to tell the difference between tricks just like someone who doesn't know skateboarding might not know the difference between a 5-0 or a 50 50.
It's all a matter of perception, but they are both great and encourage individualism and creativity.

You can't change the grip (other than a slight amount by roughing up the surface). It is determined by the urethane mixture and the age. Yes, if you use the older wheels, the urethane can change.
There are a lot of places to get wheels online that don't cost an arm and a leg. Inline Warehouse is one that I've delt with in the past that carries the Hyper Formula (http://www.inlinewarehouse.com/AdvSearch...
As marchockey indicated, the Formulas are made for indoor use. If you set up a second full set of wheels/bearings/spacers, it becomes easy to swap wheels with a second set for different uses.
One of my friends is an online vendor, primarily of rec/fitness parts but he also carries the Labeda Gripper wheels specificaly for hockey players who play outside.
His big sellers are the kits with wheels and bearings (www.rollerbob.com/L08.html) but he also sells wheels by themselves. If you buy a kit to create a second set for your skates, you will also need the appropriate spacers (it depends on your axle size).
If you are unsure of what you need, you can contact him via his web site. Bob is an honest salesman. He will work with people to get what is best for their skating, even if it is not the higher priced items.

this changes the hardness of the wheels permanently, it makes them softer and grippier, the longer you heat them the softer they get.
do not use them while they are warm/hot or they could change shape for good.

Fishbrains are one of my favorite tricks and I’ve been asked how do I do them. Basically, this is how to do a fishbrain:
1. Your Approach.
When approaching the object, try to stay parallel to it. Don’t skate right next to it, leave a little room for you to get your leg up for the grind.
2. Locking it in.
You want to try to jump with both feet at one time. When doing this grind, I sweep my fishbraining skate underneath of me and can now lock it in about 99% of the time perfectly. It takes practice to get the lock-in down, but once you get it you won’t loose it.
3. Riding it out.
Grabbing your other skate adds style to the grind, so if you can, grab your non grinding skate. Keeping your balance is not that difficult. Stay low on the grind and you’ll be fine.
4. Getting ready to get off.
You see the end of your obstacle and you start to get ready to get off of it. Start to rise off the grind a little bit so you can push off of the obstacle to land at the end.
5. Getting off.
Using your fishbraining foot, push off of the obstacle for your landing. If you didn’t rise on the grind a little bit, chances are you’re just going to ride off of the grind which can look a little sloppy.
6. Land it.
Stick the trick. Land it, call it a day, grab a burger and go home.

What is the advantage of Rollerblading(inline skating)?
I want to start roller blading :( It's not very popular in the philippines though. Maybe skateboarding is a little popular, but i like roller blading. I'm sure my parents wouldn't allow me to star -_-. But if by chance they would, what is the advantage of roller blading? In our area, it would be a perfect place to skate because not many cars pass. so is roller blading worth it?
What is the advantage of Rollerblading(inline skating)?
Compared to skateboarding? It's quicker and more versatile. You tend to be able to acceptably roller blade in public more than skateboard, as skaters tend to be frowned upon as hooligans. They work different muscle groups. Blading tends to be more of a leg workout, giving you long lean lines.

They can be cumbersome but during the breaking-in period, that would you not the skates, they could save you a lot of grief and possibly a trip to the hospital.

You should be able to buy 'rec' or hockey skates at Sports Authority or ***** etc. If you want speed skates, you'll need to buy online. Some places to try for speed skates.... Adamsinline.com, Nettracing.com, or Ntsk8.com. This should give you some places to start.

Which of these is better fitness and exercise wise? and why?

I would say both have benefits... Skating may be a little better as it requires a little more in the way of stabilistation, however in cycling the movement is more constant, you can also ride almost anywhere whereas with skates you may be limited.
I would say that both are great and just buy the one that seems like the most fun to you becuase that will be the thing that you do more often and it will be more benficial to do 30mins a day of the things you enjoy than no minutes a day of the other because you think it sucks and is borring, exercise should be as fun as possible so you are motivated to do it.

To get any good exercise you have to go dangerously fast. Running is much better exercise but my knees can't take it. I figure it's better to be cautious than to risk messing up my knees.

You mean for goalies? So you want to make the inline skate into an ice skate? I don't think it is possible. Inline skates are designed a bit different.

As a cardio exercise - it can't be beat - low impact, low strain, lots of fun and you can go ANYWHERE (mostly!).
Once you get in the swing of things, try skating on differing terrain heights (IE: up inclines, stepping up stairs etc.) to vary the workouts and the targeted muscles.
Just remember, with any exercise, you should stretch/ warm-up before you head out and, for the cardio benefits, keep in your target heart-rate for at least 18 - 20 minutes depending on how fit you already are!

Oh, and don't forget the safety equipment - especially the helmet - won't do you any good to be in shape and unable to walk!)

There isn't a difference in recreational skating, however in aggressive skating there IS a difference. Eliminating the middle two wheels is what is called a freestyle set up. This gives you more room to do "royale" tricks, or tricks where you would have been grinding between your middle two wheels.
Freestyle has become more and more popular over the last few years and frame companies are now manufacturing frames specifically for this set up type. Just one of the many options out there for aggressive inline skaters.

In-line skates vs. Quads?
I can inline skate reasonably well (for recreation and long distance, not aggressive skating performing stunts and such), but recently I went to a skating rink and got on a pair of quads. I had no form whatsoever and had to concentrate to keep my balance. I thought the transition would be easier from inlines to quads, but apparently it is not.
It seems like people can to more artistic things on quads, but it seems that inlines are better for outdoors or recreation. What do you think?

I started skating on quads when I was 3 years old. Skated until I was 20! Then I stopped completely and was introduced to in-line skating 15 years later. I found in-line skating a lot easier, and it was much faster! 4 years later, I went to a retro indoor skating rink in NYC, and saw skaters still boogying and skating on quads. I decided to buy a pair, and try it out and you are right, it was hard to transition from in-line to quads. I felt the side to side motion is more pronounced when skating on quads, and I could not dance %26amp; bounce around on them like I used to! (^_^) I know some in-line figure skaters, and their motions are closer to ice-skating than quad-skating. Maybe I have to save money to buy a pair of the in-line figure skates? Of course, you can also get a pair of the new Skorpion Quadlines that look like the old-school metal skates, except they use large, in-line wheels instead and are alot pricier. Fast AND artistic! I skate on in-line speed skates now, and do it outdoors. But I would love to be also be able to hop %26amp; dance around, just not on my speed skates; gotta figure--which skates? Quads, in-line figure skates, or Scorpions!
Reply:Quads keep your feet planted kinda flat on the ground, whereas inline skates move with your body lean. I know quad skaters who have transfered to inline and ice skating really well, but like you said, it's not easy going back to quads! Quads are slower than inlines - so yes, I do think inlines are better for recreation like long distance skating as you mentioned.
Artistic things: Yes, quads for sure, and some stuff can be done on inlines but it looks "clunkier" in my opinion. Have you ever seen this product? The Pic Skate http://www.picskate.com/ They are inlines that have been designed to be like ice skates . . . artistic skating can be done with those (look into it - there's competitions and everything).

It seems like people can to more artistic things on quads, but it seems that inlines are better for outdoors or recreation. What do you think?
In-line skates vs. Quads?
I started skating on quads when I was 3 years old. Skated until I was 20! Then I stopped completely and was introduced to in-line skating 15 years later. I found in-line skating a lot easier, and it was much faster! 4 years later, I went to a retro indoor skating rink in NYC, and saw skaters still boogying and skating on quads. I decided to buy a pair, and try it out and you are right, it was hard to transition from in-line to quads. I felt the side to side motion is more pronounced when skating on quads, and I could not dance %26amp; bounce around on them like I used to! (^_^) I know some in-line figure skaters, and their motions are closer to ice-skating than quad-skating. Maybe I have to save money to buy a pair of the in-line figure skates? Of course, you can also get a pair of the new Skorpion Quadlines that look like the old-school metal skates, except they use large, in-line wheels instead and are alot pricier. Fast AND artistic! I skate on in-line speed skates now, and do it outdoors. But I would love to be also be able to hop %26amp; dance around, just not on my speed skates; gotta figure--which skates? Quads, in-line figure skates, or Scorpions!
Reply:Quads keep your feet planted kinda flat on the ground, whereas inline skates move with your body lean. I know quad skaters who have transfered to inline and ice skating really well, but like you said, it's not easy going back to quads! Quads are slower than inlines - so yes, I do think inlines are better for recreation like long distance skating as you mentioned.
Artistic things: Yes, quads for sure, and some stuff can be done on inlines but it looks "clunkier" in my opinion. Have you ever seen this product? The Pic Skate http://www.picskate.com/ They are inlines that have been designed to be like ice skates . . . artistic skating can be done with those (look into it - there's competitions and everything).
Reply:I love quads, because they are much easier to turn on (so you can do spins ). However, It's really hard to do jumps and things on them.

Best inline skate for beginners?
You want something that fits good and feel comfortable. I wouldnt suggest going out and getting the most expensive top of the line skate, but don't buy the cheapest either! In-line skates come with wheel bearings that have a number rateing associated with them, if you have ever ice skated in your life and are pretty good then you can go with a APEC 5 bearing and do well, if you are a true all out beginner, stick with an APEC 3 bearing. The lower the number the less speed you can generate while skating. You want something with plenty of ankle suport too, you might not get the prettiest pair on the rack, but if you are serious about skating on the regular you dont need to worry about a fashion show do you? Also get something with a REAR break on it, stay away from hockey skate replicas! Try going to a sporting goods store, stay away from Wal*mart and stores like that. Usually the people in those department are extremely helpful. I hope I shed a little light on the subject for you! Good luck and have fun skating.
OH PS - Get a helmet, again you arent in a fashion show! Protect your noggin! If you are a real beginner you WILL fall!

Yes I can! And so can you. The only difference between doing it on ice and on a dry surface is to be sure your wheels don't touch the ground. Position yourself like you're doing a royale and balance on the sides of your boots to slide. And try learning on as smooth a surface as possible. Indoor parks are great since the ramps are usually covered in skatelite or masonite. You can also do unity cess slides, farv cess slides, the list goes on and on.

are the razors genesys 6 a good skate for beginners, will they absorb the landing impact of big drops? or should i get Rollerblade trs downtown 3? the thing about those is that the liner slides, and i broke a buckle in the store? the nearest skateshop is an hour away

The Razors Genesys are MUCH sturdier skates than Rollerblades. I've had the same problem with the liners in the Downtowns...they slip and slide unless you crank the buckle down and really tighten the laces.
The Genesys boot is very sturdy and will absorb a lot of impact from gaps and big drops. They're also much more comfortable than Rollerblades (at least for me). If you want a somewhat stiff and sturdy skate, you'll love these boots. And they should last quite a while since they're all plastic.

Reply:Personally bro I have bladed in about 2 years but I was sponsored in the like so I do know what I am talking about....Listen if you want to skate skate...don't worry about the shoe don't blame anything on the shoe infact don't blame anything on anyone but yourself...unless its painfully obvious ;) Just buy what is comfortable for you what is iny our price range and what you like...although I like the USD 08 Allstars they are a little pricy...otherwise get what you dig thats that...skate

Does anyone know of any socks to wear while skating that help wick away sweat and maybe help with cooling?

Helping with cooling is more an effect of your skates. If air and moisture doesn't move through it, the socks will not have an effect. Depending on your skates, you might be able to add some venting in the plastic areas.
For getting moisture away from your feet, you want a synthetic inner (or only) layer next to your feet. Thin or no socks can be the ultimate for this if your skates have breathable wicking liners (many newer skates). Unfortunately, if you bought your skates with room for socks, that can make them overly large.
Cotton will hold moisture. If you have thin synthetic socks inside of thin cotton socks, it will move the moisture away from your foot and slowly release it from the outside.
I am lucky and my feet don't sweat a lot. I can wear plain cotton athletic socks. When I take them out, most of the moisture also leaves the skates and I don't need a lot of effort drying them out.
